Rookery School

SEND

Rookery is committed to identifying and removing barriers to learning so that pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities can participate, progress and thrive as valued members of the school community.

Removing Barriers, Raising Ambition

Inclusion at Rookery means ensuring that every pupil can access high-quality teaching, participate in school life and make meaningful progress. Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities are supported through an approach that combines ambitious expectations with appropriate adaptation and carefully targeted provision.

We work closely with children, families and relevant professionals to understand individual strengths and needs. Support is reviewed over time so that provision remains purposeful, promotes independence and enables pupils to participate as fully as possible in the curriculum and wider opportunities.

Supporting every child

We recognise that children learn and develop in different ways. Our approach begins with high-quality inclusive classroom teaching, clear assessment and close communication with families. Where a child needs additional support, provision is planned around their individual strengths, needs and desired outcomes.

A graduated approach

Support may include adaptations within the classroom, targeted small-group work, individual intervention and advice or involvement from specialist professionals. Provision is reviewed regularly so that staff and families can understand what is working and what needs to change.

Working with families

Parents and carers know their children best. We encourage families to speak first with the class teacher if they have concerns about learning or development. The SENCO and wider inclusion team can provide further guidance, coordinate support and work with external services where appropriate.

Participation and ambition

Children with SEND should have access to the full life of the school. We aim to ensure pupils can participate in the curriculum, enrichment, visits and wider opportunities, with reasonable adjustments and carefully planned support where required.

Supporting Successful Transitions

We plan transitions carefully so that every child, including pupils with SEND, feels secure, understood and ready for their next stage. This includes children joining Rookery, moving between year groups and preparing to move to a new school or setting.

Staff work with children, families and, where appropriate, other education, health and care professionals to share relevant information and understand individual needs. For pupils who may benefit from additional support, we can provide enhanced transition arrangements such as extra visits, familiarisation activities, visual resources and opportunities to meet key staff.

Transition planning is tailored to the individual child, with appropriate adjustments made to reduce barriers, maintain continuity of support and promote independence and confidence as they move forward in their education.

Working Together to Help Every Child Thrive

Strong partnerships between home and school are at the heart of everything we do. By working together, we create the best possible opportunities for every child to succeed academically, socially and emotionally.
