Enrichment

Enrichment is an important part of life at Rookery, extending learning beyond the classroom and giving every child opportunities to discover new interests, develop talents and experience the wider world. Through visits, visitors, performances, clubs, events and practical experiences, we aim to broaden horizons and create memorable opportunities that complement our curriculum.

Curriculum Intent

At Rookery School, we believe that a rich education extends beyond the knowledge and skills taught within individual subjects. Our enrichment offer is designed to broaden pupils’ experiences, raise aspirations and provide opportunities for children to discover interests, talents and possibilities that they may not otherwise encounter.

Enrichment supports our commitment to developing the whole child. Through carefully chosen experiences, we aim to build confidence, independence, curiosity, creativity and resilience while strengthening pupils’ understanding of the curriculum and the wider world.

We recognise that access to wider experiences can differ considerably between children. Our ambition is therefore to ensure that pupils, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, can participate in meaningful opportunities that enhance their education and contribute to their personal development.

Curriculum Implementation

Enrichment is implemented as an integral part of pupils’ experience at Rookery School, complementing the taught curriculum and broadening the opportunities available to every child. Educational visits, visitors, workshops, performances, sporting opportunities, creative projects, clubs, competitions and other wider experiences are selected to deepen curriculum learning, introduce pupils to new people, places and ideas, and help them discover interests and talents.

Opportunities are planned across pupils’ time at school so that experiences build on previous learning and support increasing confidence, independence and participation. Where appropriate, enrichment is linked directly to curriculum content, giving pupils meaningful contexts in which to apply knowledge and vocabulary. Other experiences deliberately extend beyond the classroom curriculum to broaden horizons, develop cultural awareness and raise aspirations.

Teachers help pupils make connections between enrichment experiences and their learning through preparation, discussion and reflection. Opportunities for collaboration, performance, responsibility and leadership support pupils’ wider personal development alongside academic learning. The school seeks to ensure that barriers to participation are identified and addressed so that enrichment contributes to an ambitious and inclusive experience for all pupils.

Reading, Vocabulary & Oracy

Enrichment provides valuable opportunities for pupils to encounter new vocabulary, communicate with different audiences and apply their reading and spoken language skills in meaningful contexts.

Visits, workshops, performances and practical activities expose children to language associated with different subjects, professions, places and experiences. Teachers support pupils in understanding and using this vocabulary so that new experiences contribute to their wider knowledge.

Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, discuss their experiences, express opinions and reflect upon what they have learned. Opportunities to perform, present, collaborate and communicate with others also help children develop confidence in speaking and listening.

Inclusion & Adaptation

We want enrichment at Rookery to provide meaningful opportunities for all pupils. We consider potential barriers to participation and make reasonable adaptations so that children with different needs can access and benefit from the school’s wider offer.

The needs of pupils with SEND and those who may face financial, social or other barriers are considered when experiences are planned. Appropriate support and adaptations enable pupils to participate while encouraging confidence and increasing independence.

Through an inclusive approach to enrichment, we aim to ensure that pupils’ circumstances do not unnecessarily limit their opportunities to experience the wider curriculum, discover new interests and develop their talents.

Assessment

The impact of enrichment is considered through pupils’ participation, engagement and reflection rather than through formal assessment.

Teachers use discussion, observation, pupil voice and examples of pupils’ work and participation to consider how experiences have contributed to their knowledge, confidence and personal development.

Children are encouraged to reflect upon their experiences, make connections with previous learning and consider what they have discovered about themselves and the wider world.

The school can use this information to review its enrichment offer and consider whether pupils are receiving a broad and meaningful range of opportunities throughout their time at Rookery.

Enrichment & Wider Opportunities

Throughout their time at Rookery, pupils can experience a wide range of opportunities that complement classroom learning and contribute to the wider life of the school.

These can include educational visits, arts and cultural experiences, music and performance, sporting activities and competitions, creative projects, workshops, visitors, clubs and opportunities to celebrate learning with families and the wider community.

Where possible, experiences are connected meaningfully to curriculum learning so that pupils can see knowledge in context, encounter new environments and apply their skills in different situations.

Rookery’s enrichment offer continues to evolve in response to the curriculum, the needs and interests of pupils and opportunities available within Birmingham and the wider community.

Curriculum Impact

By the time pupils leave Rookery, we want them to have experienced a rich and varied range of opportunities that have broadened their horizons and contributed positively to their academic, social and personal development.

Pupils should be increasingly confident when encountering new experiences, communicating with others, working collaboratively and taking on responsibility. They should have had opportunities to discover and develop their own interests and talents while learning about those of others.

We want pupils to leave Rookery with positive memories, greater knowledge of the world around them and the confidence and curiosity to embrace new opportunities as they continue their education.
