Intent
The skills, knowledge and understanding gained through learning a language contribute to the development of children’s oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture and those of others. Children gain confidence, knowledge and transferrable skills about language learning to take with them to KS3 and help them progress with languages in their further education.
The children at Rookery are at the heart of this community. We recognise that each and every one of them is unique with their own ideas, talents, needs and aspirations. Working together in harmony with parents who share with us this responsibility of educating our children. We prepare them for a world beyond our school.
Implementation
We teach French across Key Stage 2. The school uses Junior Jam to support the teaching and learning of French. This provides clear progression for the development of speaking and listening and vocabulary acquisition. Junior Jam believe that learning a new language is vital within primary schools because it creates extensive opportunities for pupils and allows them to discover other cultures.
In line with the requirements of the National Curriculum 2014, Junior Jam’s outstanding French is delivered by qualified and experienced teachers and instructors who are native or fluent speakers in their language. There are clear planning and curriculum mapping documents.
Impact
Through the high quality first teaching of French taking place we will see the impact of the subject in the following ways:
- Children will become aware that a language has a structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another.
- Children will develop their language and communication through development of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
- Children will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of the Spanish culture.
- Children will transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully and will be well prepared to continue and develop their language skills.
