![]() Maths is a core subject, exciting to study because it has its own rules, puzzles, patterns and investigations. It is also vital in enabling children to make sense of the data they generate and explore in other areas of the curriculum. At Rookery we encourage the children to apply the skills they have learnt to real-life situations. Maths is taught in stand alone sessions and applied through cross curricular projects. There are different strands to the Maths curriculum.
![]() Mental Maths supports children's calculations. Children enjoy fun and challenging activities that are delivered through the interactive whiteboard and through a range of practical activities. Using and applying maths gives children key processes to use in mathematical investigations. It is taught through other elements such as number, shape and space, data handling and measures. In order to encourage rapid recall of times tables children are able to earn tables club badges and become a member of the '99 tables Club'. Children in Year 2 to Year 5 have the opportunity to become a member of the 'Maths Games Library' where they can borrow a game each week which they can enjoy with their family at home at the same time as improving their maths skills. We have a school bank run in conjunction with HSBC, which is open to Year 5 and 6 pupils to encourage economical awareness through handling their own money. It is run by Year 6 pupils who apply for their post and take part in an interview. Maths is taught using a variety of approaches. Some of the children's favourite activities are the Mathletics website, fun and interactive activities where children can compete against children all around the world and the mind boggling Maths Road Show which has a range of hands on activities to develop the children's thinking!
