The humanities curriculum helps children to understand who they are, and their place in the local and global communities.

It is made up of the national curriculum subjects: History, Geography, and Personal Social and Health Education and Citizenship as well as Religious Education.

They form the basis of most of the projects, and inspire many of the visits and visitors with whom the children have the opportunity to study. Children explore local places such as Handsworth Park and Sandwell Valley, and also places further afield for example, the National History Museum and Imperial War Museum in London. Together these contribute to Rookery's exciting creative curriculum.

Many 'Mantle of the Expert' projects are based on humanities subjects. These include, organising travel overseas or being part of a working party investigating child labour in Victorian times.

The Citizenship and Geography curriculum is enhanced by Rookery's International School status. This involves the school being twinned with schools in Delhi, India and Nairobi, Kenya. Children from Mira Model School in Delhi and Rookery study some of the same projects, exchange work and opinions, mainly through the Internet. There is an annual exchange visit between the teachers which provides the opportunity for the relationship to develop and for the staff to share good practice and ideas.
