Year 3

At Rookery in year 3, the focus is on engaging pupils deeply in their learning in lots of fun and exciting ways. We recognise that every child is different and tailor activities to meet a range of different needs.

Some of the amazing opportunities available to pupils in year 3 include completing outdoor and adventure activities on residential at our recently renovated shared outdoor learning centre, ‘The Brighouse’ in Atherstone, Warwickshire. This gives pupils a completely different learning experience which develops confidence, physical abilities and team work skills.

A range of visits throughout the year support the curriculum, engage pupils in learning through first-hand and practical experiences, and maintain pupils’ interest by bringing the learning to life. Trips include discovering the amazing Ancient Greek artefacts collection at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, visiting a real Roman villa at Chedworth, and exploring the beautiful plants at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

The highlight of the year is year 3’s event where pupils invite their parents to share their learning journey at a special evening with interactive workshops and creative performances. Pupils lead the learning and decide how they want to present it so each year the events are unique. This year, pupils wrote, directed and performed an Ancient Greek musical filled with monsters, epic battles and included the use of pupils’ handmade theatre masks made with their specialist art teacher. Pupils really enjoyed leading music, art and story writing workshops where they showed off all their learning to their friends and families.

A firm favourite of year 3 pupils is their Caribbean topic which includes a design and technology project to design and make fruity cocktails and a creative project to design and make tie-dye t-shirts. Pupils organise a fashion show to share their creative outcomes with parents during which they sell their fruity cocktails and sing some Caribbean songs.
