At Rookery we value our learning community where everyone is empowered to grow and develop in order to be the best that they can be.

The children at Rookery are at the heart of this community.
We recognise that each and everyone of them is unique with their own ideas, talents, needs and aspirations.

Consequently we expect the children to...

  • Take responsibility for shaping their own learning pathway.

  • Value every learning opportunity.

  • Take risks and develop resilience.

  •

In order to be successful and empowered learners who are ...

  • Literate, numerate and confident users of ICT.

  • Equipped to live in an increasingly diverse, complex and rapidly changing world.

  • Confident communicators.

  • Brimming with confidence and self assurance.

  •

We know that we can best fulfil our mission by...

  • Working together in harmony with parents who share with us the responsibility of educating our children for a world beyond our school.

  • Listening to, and valuing, the contribution of the whole school community.

  •

Rookery is a truly multi-cultural inner city school situated in the heart of Handsworth, just off Soho Road, some 3 miles from Birmingham city centre.   View map

We have a rich ethnic mix of children who are motivated and keen to learn.

It is a large school serving an area of significant deprivation.
Just under 40% of our pupils are eligible for free school meals.

Most pupils are from minority ethnic backgrounds and just under a quarter are at an early stage of learning English. A higher-than-average proportion of pupils enter or leave the school partway through the year.

At Rookery we are proud of our inclusive ethos and consider ourselves to be truly a school of the community.

We strongly believe in lifelong learning; we have a flourishing community base where we offer a range of vocational/non vocational adult courses in partnership with Adult Education.

This has impacted significantly on the confidence and self esteem of a number of parents who have achieved NVQ's to consequently secure employment in the school.
