Rookery is a truly multi – cultural inner city school situated in the heart of Handsworth, just off Soho Road, some 3 miles from the city centre. There is a rich ethnic mix of children who are motivated and keen to learn.

It is a large school serving an area of significant deprivation. Just under 40% of our pupils are eligible for free school meals. Most pupils are from minority ethnic backgrounds and just under a quarter are at an early stage of learning English. A higher-than-average proportion of pupils enters or leaves the school partway through the year.

We are a two-form entry school admitting 60 children in each year group.

Children who are of nursery age, are admitted into the Foundation Unit in the year of their 4th birthday. Part – time places are allocated from a waiting list held by the school. Priority is given to children who have siblings already at Rookery and then to those who live closest to the school. Full time places are available for those children whose families meet the criteria set out by the LA.

Admission into reception is managed by the Local Authority. You will receive a letter from the LA in November while your child is in Nursery. You are asked to select your choice of school for the following September. The form MUST be completed and sent back to the LA in December or your child will not have a school place allocated.

Admission criteria:-

  1. Statement of Special Educational Needs
  2. Children in Public Care (LAC)
  3. Siblings already at the school
  4. Attendance at Rookery Nursery
  5. Distance from the school

Children can be admitted at any age up to 11 years providing there are places in the appropriate year group, an admission form will need to be completed and returned to the school.

We pride ourselves on our inclusive ethos and welcome children from all sections of the community, regardless of race, faith, gender, or ability.
